Task 2 - Film research
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Development
British film director Mike Newell was chosen to direct the film after working on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Steve Kloves, the screenwriter for the previous instalments, also returned for Goblet of Fire. On adapting the 636-page book into a feature-length film, Kloves commented that "we always thought it would be two films, but we could never figure out how to break it into two."

Filming
Principal photography began on 4th May 2004, although scenes involved in the film weren't filmed until 25th June 2004 at England's Leavesden Studios.

Set design
Just like the previous instalments, Stuart Craig and Stephanie McMillan provided the films sets and art designs. There were many new sets and old transformations of the old sets created. Each task of the Triwizard Tournament required a massive set. The rock quarry set for the first task, was built in two separate sections of Leavesden Studios. For the second task, involving the underwater scene, the film crew designed and built a blue screen tank holding "about half a million gallons of water". As for the final task, which took place in a maze, hedge walls ranging from 20 to 40 feet tall were constructed and enhanced with computer-generated imagery.

Music
John Williams, who had scored the first three Harry Potter movies, could not return to the fourth instalment because of a busy schedule, so Patrick Doyle was asked to replace him. Pulp lead singer, Jarvis Cocker was one of the musicians invited by Doyle to write a song for a wizard rock band. Cocker, as well as, Johnny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead were picked to play the fictional band, both preforming songs for the soundtrack and having a cameo in the movie.

Differences from book
The Goblet of Fire is twice the length of Prisoner of Azkaban, because of this the writers and producers had to reduce certain scenes and concepts to make the transition from page to screen. The game play at the Quidditch World Cup was removed for timing reasons, leaving an abrupt jump which was considered to be "awkward" or "rushed" by some viewers.

Some characters that are in the books never made an appearance in the movie and some scenes were either cut from the movie or were never filmed at all. For example, there is no scene that shows Rita Skeeter is an illegal, unregistered animagus. Harry is never seen receiving or giving away the 1,000 galleons in prize winnings. The scene where Barty Crouch Jr was taken back to Azkaban has been changed in the film, in the book, he is imprisoned for the rest of his life and heavily guarded to make sure he doesn't escape again, whereas, in the film, he is "killed".

Wyrd sisters lawsuit
Warner Bros. approached a Canadian folk group called The Wyrd Sisters to obtain permission to use the name "The Weird Sisters" for their fictional wizard band. When the deal could not be made, the band filed a $40-million lawsuit against Warner Bros, as well as, the members of the fictional band (members of the band Pulp and Radiohead) for the misuse of their group's name.

The Canadian band also brought an injunction to stop the release of the film in its country as it contained a performance by the identically named fictional rock band. A judge in Ontario dismissed this motion, and to avoid any further controversy, Warner Bros. rendered the band unnamed in the film and many derived products.

Funding
There was a budget of £150 million for the company to create the movie.

Casting
Due to this movie being part of a franchise, the producers refused to change the main cast members as the audience had become comfortable and familiar because they had been in the last three movies. These include:

Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter
Emma Watson - Hermione Granger
Rupert Grint - Ron Weasley
Tom Felton - Draco Malfoy

However, because this is a new movie, there are some new cast members who have taken on the roles of some of the characters that were adapted from the book. The new cast members include:

Brendan Gleeson - Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody
David Tenant - Barty Crouch Jr
Robert Pattinson - Cedric Diggory
Clemence Poesy - Fleur Delacour
Stanislav Ianevski - Viktor Krum
